Soon you should find your defenses have completely outpaced enemy damage, and you can stand in the middle of a crowd of enemies laughing off their feeble attacks. Investing in fortitude and stamina are generally inferior options compared to the above three methods of survival. Tip #5: If you find yourself dying a lot, prioritize increasing dodge, wits and buying the next level of body armor (every hub after the first sells an improved version of your armor). This means the sniper rifle and steyr aug can get a pretty hefty damage boost just by hitting tab before firing. An important point here that is mentioned nowhere in the game is any weapon that is zoomed in gets a 50% damage bonus applied to it. For any weapon with a scope, it lets you zoom in. For the colt anaconda or the auto shotgun it increases your rate of fire. For melee weapons it lets you block incoming melee attacks. Tip #4: The tab button lets you activate special abilities on your weapons.

It doesn't make up for the poor quality of melee weapons in late game, but if you do insist on swearing off guns it's perfectly viable. Note the maximum ranged skill obtainable is 15 for any character, so melee does have an advantage in this department. Strength buffs like potence also work like this, enabling a character to obtain 21 melee skill when combining multiple strength-boosting disciplines. So auspex gives +4 to perception, allowing your character to get 14 max range skill instead of the usual cap of 10. Tip #3: You can raise your combat stats above 10 via the relevant buffing disciplines, and it will increase your damage with the relevant type of weapons. But unfortunately the best melee weapons in the game don't remotely hold a candle to the best guns in the game, and so you want to plan to swap over at some point. At the start of the game melee weapons are awesome, you can get the fire axe in the haunted hotel which will see you through the first 2 hub worlds. Tip #2: Melee doesn't scale as well as ranged. Instead go attack (briefest of pauses) attack (briefest of pauses) attack and so on in that rhythm.that way your character will always do the right to left forward slash every time. Spamming the attack button will cause your character to do a spin attack on the third swing, which lowers your DPS and leaves you vulnerable to a counter attack. Tip #1: Melee attack by steady tapping instead of spamming. So I thought I'd put together a few tips to make combat better for first time players, or returning veterans who might not have appreciated the game's (often ill-explained) mechanics. I personally think VTMB's combat is actually pretty serviceable, although obviously the roleplay-heavy first half of the game is still more fun. The post yesterday about VTMB was awesome, but it got a lot of comments from people who didn't like the combat or felt the 2nd half was an endless frustrating slog.
